The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected Egypt as the hosts of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after their executive meeting in Dakar, Senegal.
South Africa and Egypt were the only two nations to submit bids for the tournament, which is only two and a half months away from kicking off, after Cameroon were dumped as hosts late last year.
Executive committee of CAF revealed Egypt as the nation to replace Cameroon as 2019 Afcon hosts because of Cameroons delays in infrastructure and security concerns.
This year’s tournament will be unique because the competition has been expanded to 24 nations and has moved from the usual January slot to June.
Egypt last hosted the Afcon in 2006 – for South Africa it was 2013 – they’ve hosted on four occasions in total compared to South Africa’s two.
Last weekend, the 24 participating teams were confirmed, including three nations; Burundi, Mauritania and Madagascar, participating for the first time and Kenya is back since 2004.
The following are all 24 teams that have qualified for the continent’s most prestigious football tournament.
Egypt Algeria Angola Burundi Benin Cameroon Democratic Republic of Congo
Guinea Ghana Guinea-Bissau Ivory Coast Kenya Madagascar Mali
Mauritania Morocco Namibia Nigeria Senegal South Africa Tanzania
Tunisia Uganda Zimbabwe
